I am looking into the possibilities of accepting a job at my local sea ray dealer. They have an position opening for a salesman. I have not yet applied there, but know a few of the salesman that currently work there.

What do you guys think of the idea of working for a boat dealer?? I do have sales experience as a Account Manager (outside sales) for a electrical distributor. I know what your thinking, electrical is way different then boats, but I look at it as sales is sales, whether you selling cars or houses.

Any body out there actually work for a dealer?? Just want to look at all posibilities.

i have worked sales when younger. electricity, is something people have to have whether in a good economy or bad economy. a searay is a luxury, which people do not have to have, especailly in todays economy. with where the trends are going in the boating market, i would stay where you are. at the present time, those guys at the dealership, are looking at potential customers, as the next bag of groceries. or tank of gas. i suspect in the next 2 years, you will see them changing jobs. most work on a commission base, whether straight commission, or draw against commission. any way the dealer is only going to keep the straight commission sales men as things get tougher.

You need to take a close look at the business plan for the dealership. I work for a dealer that sells EVERYTHING. We have Boats (bass, runabout, pontoons, alum), ATVs (Polaris ATV and UTV) Motorcycles (dirt and street). We also have a full line hunting store. We never run out of things to sell. Where other dealers are seasonal we just keep selling different things all year long. Hope this helps.

If you think you can sell freezers to Eskimos, then you ought to do well selling boats in the current situation.

Isn't it ICE to ESKIMOS and SAND to ARABS? Anyway, I just read TD's link and I think selling boats nowadays is like a car dealer selling a Hummer...Very risky business and hope you have a large reserve in your bank account.
