Sea Ray SRV 170 Mercruiser I/O, What Year made ??

We ended up with a Sea Ray SRV 170, 4 cyl Mercruiser I/O for part of our labor on a roofing job. We haven't been able to find out the year it was built. According to Sea Ray website, pre 1972 did not have hull # on stern. Boat serial # is 6171784, Stern drive serial # is 2001810. Also, we suspect fuel pump diaphragm may be leaking, as there was lots of old gas in the engine oil. New oil, filter, plugs, wire, etc. Won't pump fuel from can, very little at carb. Are kits available to rebuild fuel pump ? Runs at idle, if spraying gas into carb, sounds good. Lots if questions, but want to go fishin' before it gets too cold ! Any info would be SWEET. If Your Drive S/n Is Right It Would Be A 66 But They Didnt Make That Engine Till 85 And Quit In 86 Do You Have The Engine S/n

Hello : I found the engine serial # on a tag above the starter. # 2790260. Thanks for your help. raceri69

What kind of 4 cylinder engine.
The problem with ID with just a serial number is that it's too old and not in any file that way anymore.
But, if you knew what type engine you had, you could figure year from there.
Could be a GM 2.5L 120. or a GM 3.0L 140, or even a Renault 80

Hello Don : From my limited amount of experience with Mercruiser engines, it looks like it had a 140 sticker on the valve cover, but not possitive. It, the engine, is painted black. Do you have any hints to help with identifying which block it could be ? We need to know as much as possible, so we can find out what is available for the fuel pump, as it may have to be replaced, or hopefully, we can get a rebuild kit for it. Go up to the adults only sticky and download the OEM service manual. It'l be manual #1 (It's a really big file). There are plenty of pictures of the engines too.

Hello Again Don : You have 27,000 + posts, so you are 27,000 + more than me ! I very much Thank-you for any info you have to help us with. I was raised to never feel it is bad to ask a stupid question, so I hope this is not one, but if it is, SORRY ! Where is " go up to the adults only sticky ", to download the oem service manual ?? I totally respect your quote about "doing it right the first time " !! I always have the best intention of doing it right the first time, or I would rather not even attempt many projects. I am too old to change the way I was raised, but smart enough to know I can learn something new everyday ! If you are still willing to teach me some more things to learn today, Please give me some idea about where the " adults only sticky " can be found ! When I was younger, I would have taken that as alot different place, than to download a manual !! Thanks again, and have a great day ! raceri69....

Thanks to all that offered help and suggestions ! I downloaded the oem manual, found that I have an AC fuel pump, but still haven't found out if the engine is a 120 or a 140. It is a G.M. block, old iron horse. Any other ideas for cking how to determine engine size ? I haven't heard from anyone about the fuel pump rebuild possibility. Kits available ? Or do I need to start new post ? Still learning forum do's & don'ts. Thanks again, raceri69.......

Ayuh,... The 120hp has Only a pulley on the crankshaft,...
The 3.0l Also has a harmonic balancer with it's pulley...

I haven't heard from anyone about the fuel pump rebuild possibility. Kits available ?

Nope,... I haven't seen a "Kit" in years,.... just rebuilt or new fuelpumps...

Yo Bond-o : Thanks lots for engine I.D. It is a 120. I removed the fuel pump, disasembled, cleaned, and reinstalled. The rascal works now ! Runs up to 4000 rpm no problem. I need to do a carb clean-rebuild yet most likely, to help idle and throttle response, but at least it runs now ! Thanks again to all of you guys that supplied you knowledge and info. I will be sure to pass along what I have learned also. We maybe too late for trying it out this year, but hopefully it will be in trustworthy ship shape by spring. Have a good one, raceri69......
