Looking at 240 sundeck, 05 06 year model. How do these boats handle? Would the 5.0 Merc be enough engine? Any comments appreciated.

Re: sea ray

with a bravo 3 those boats handle very nicely, alpha not as good at lower speeds

5.0 is fine for that hull

Re: sea ray

Only help I can provide is years ago, a friend of mine had an 18' deep V with a 165 hp I/O inline 6. Don't know how that relates to todays ratings, but a V8 at the time was 188 hp and it was a 302 cu in. Guessing the 165 was a Chev or Ford 250-300 cu in so that would relate to something less than 5 liter as I recall the 302 V8 was later reclassified as a 5 liter.

He could only do 45mph with 4 of us aboard.....Ha! A superb boat in finish and performance.

Just pulled out my cross reference table and Liters to CU is CU/61.02. So the inline 6 if a 250 cu in (Chev) was 4.1 liters and if Ford probably a 300 cu in which is 4.9 liters.

I can't get your post back up while typing this response so I have do reply from memory. I think you said that you were looking at a 24' with a 5 liter engine. Considering a boat of that size would have some sort of cabin and would be hauling around possibly half a dozen folks, the a 5 liter may only get you in the 25 mph range at WOT and with water toys, you could have some problems.

Always have to ask the embarrassing question and that is, WHY is the seller selling it, really????? Performance? If so, you too may be turning it around after the first few outings.

Re: sea ray

If it has a bravo III you should be good. Mine is a 220 with a 7.4 Bravo I, and I feel it needs more. When I was testing out boats last year, I looked at one that was a 24 foot regal with a 5.0 in it with a bravo III. It could not get out of its own way, but handled nice once on plane.

most have 5.0, not just one i'm interested in. guess best thing to do is test one of each if possible.

A friend of mine had an 04 240 Sundeck, 5.0L Bravo III, it ran fine, not sure of the top speed but I do know that it cruised at 35 mph with 6 adults onboard, 5 of which were full figured, over 200 lbs each. I would get one with that power with no problem.

Re: sea ray

I have an 04 Regal Cruiser, with a 5.0 BIII. Boat is much heavier than a Bow Rider. I've had it over 40 MPH, not to good for the engine, but I've had 8 people on my boat with no problem getting up on plane. Same motor on a lighter boat should be no problem...
