I use Boat US (the red boats vs the yellow)

after needing a tow twice, I recommend some sort of towing insurance.

Both towing services are good, however, you need a way to contact any towing service. Cell phone won't work.

VHF with a tall antenna is an option. Satellite phone is better.

Does that policy have a rider that covers you offshore & have you ever been out that far? Just wondering. What does the policy specifically state as far as towing is concerned & if something happens, who's coming to get you? You should know this stuff before you venture 20 miles offshore. It ain't a walk in the park.

Try progressive there 55% cheaper than boatUS for me. Not that I did the math when BoatUS almost doubled my rate. Maybe i am slow to let things go thats what my shrink keeps telling me.

I took a boat us script for the maximum and my insurance agent is going to put something together to look at with towing and liability. I have been out with a friends boat a few times. I have great respect for it. I installed a garmin gps and chartplotter-new vhf-compass.he says hes pretty sure it covers out to 15 miles.

progressive does not have tow boats. and for $156 unlimited towing from Boat US, I would not even think of trying to go thru progressive.

also, a 23 mile tow would cost you about $1200 without the towing insurance. $1196 to be exact. a 1/2 mile tow would be about $300

The towing included with my Progressive policy covers up to $500 a year.

That doesn’t buy much. The estimate on my last tow $1,700 roughly 10 miles. Had the guy tow me to a neighborhood dock he knew about for $625. From there I took a $45 taxi ride to get the truck. Then paid the $16 toll to bring the boat back across the bridge.

Went on line the next day and renewed by Boat US towing I’d had for years before I decided to “save” a couple bucks.

Boatus unlimited towing...$159. up to 75 miles out. Your choice of port.

Someone was telling me about a plan that tows to the closet port that was cheaper. Don’t remember the provider.

Local Towboat office will answer a phone call, if you have service, a very big If around here. Communication with the boat is via vhf only

and that is why I would not even think about calling progressive for a tow on the water and have unlimited towing with Boat US

If you need a tow who 's Progressive going to call? BOAT/US does boats. Progressive does mini vans.

Call Seatow, Boat US, whoever you want.
Make a claim.
Submit receipt via email.
Had a check within a couple of days.

When did you get this info from progressive? I need to call because I am unaware of their 500$ limit.

That was two years ago. They have since replaced the towing allowance with slide and glide.

I added slide and glide to my policy last year but immediately canceled after reading the docs in detail and talking with a sales rep.

Two conditions where deal breakers:

1. They say “unlimited towing” but the reality is that it only covers towing to nearest dock or repair facility. Being towed to your place of origin, ie ramp with tow vehicle, may or may not be covered.

2. Must be during “normal” season. As avid Striper fisherman, I typically boat 10 months a year. Couldn’t get an definition of what constitutes a “normal” season for my area

Because I had to know

This is straight from Progressive
They will arrange the tow or I also I have a 1800 number to call and that company will locate the closest available tow company.

75 mile from US soil
coverage maximum tow fee per hour $250
$3000 limit per tow
if needed I can arrange for my own tow and they will reimburse me but it necc.

I do not know what just the towing is as its part of my full plan but I am saving quite a bit with Progressive

it’s the small print that will get you

If none of our authorized service representatives are available, we will pay the reasonable charges, as determined by us, for covered services rendered by a licensed service provider that you or a relative incur due to the covered disablement. However, we will not pay for such covered services unless we were given notice and approved the use of the licensed service provider in advance. We will not pay more than $250 per hour or $3000 per covered disablement for covered services rendered by a provider other than one of our authorized service representatives.

Covered:
on water towing from the site of the covered disablement to the nearest accessible dock or port where the watercraft can be repaired or removed from the water. If the covered watercraft is towed to any place other than the nearest such dock or port, you will be responsible for any additional charges incurred.

Actually I was told if they cannot arrange a tow that I would be reimbursed for anything within the guidelines above as long as I made contact with them first and I am ok with that. And if you are stupid enough to arrange a $3000 tow without calling your tow insurance company first you probably shouldn’t be reimbursed.

I am a towing provider for cars and the two worst companies to tow for are Farmers and Gieco Gieco is US TOW while I am only assuming there boat services are not any better. Ill stick with Progressive, in writing and given that I have copies of each ones coverage and I compared them side by side when Gieco US boats doubled my rates they are almost exactly the same written policy except I have a larger person injury amount with Progressive and my rates are 55% less. Maybe it is or isn’t better cover or the same coverage for half the price but the policy’s are literally almost exactly the same words and phrasing.

I may or may not be able to pay out of pocket initially to be reimbursed...... so that makes it a no-brainer

the $175 for unlimited towing means I simply call tow boat US and its handled..... no muss....no fuss.... and I give Capt'n Fynn a few beers because he just spent 3-4 hours hauling my arse back in to where my trailer was....

the $175 per year is less than a tank of fuel.
