1998 mercury racing HP 500. It uses the sea water/fuel pump cam system found in the attached link

This is the older style with the two piece water pump cam, not the new single plastic piece with the inlet/outlet molded in.
the gasket (part number 3 on the above link) is the gasket between the cover and outer wear plate. There are a few small pre-printed strips of either silicone or adhesive on one side of the gasket, the other side is blank. Which side does the adhesive face? Towards the cover or towards the wear plate?
I have the service manual #3 specifically for this engine, it’s not specific about the orientation of the gasket.
