I have a 96 SeaDoo GTI. The key won't beep which means nothing on the ski will work. The battery is new and full charged. Checked the fuses and they are fine. Anyone have any ideas on whats wrong or what to do? Thanks and Happy fathers day to all.

Re: SeaDoo Problem

I have a 97 Challenger that did the same thing. I thought the worst..............have to replace the damn #$%%^%^& controller at megabucks. Turned out that due the age and condition of the lanyard (lots of use & abuse) the key itself was the culprit and a quick trip to the dealer & $65 for a new key (programmed), I was back in buisiness. Had to bring the boat to the dealer because it's the controller that gets programmed, not the key. The key contains a factory burned number that cannot be changed. When I looked at my key you could see it was beat up. If it's a hassle to bring the ski to the dealer, take the key to dealer & they can at least confirm if it's good or bad.

If the key is good, start looking at the wiring between the post & the controller. The post has a reed switch in it that is actuated by a magnet in the key.

And of course - consult the service manual

Good luck !!

Re: SeaDoo Problem

you can download the service manual for free online and if you have a cheap multimeter it's a quick check to see if it's the key or a bad key post. Either one of those is an easy and cheap fix. Also if the key is loose on the post you can use a zip tie around the outside to tighten it up.

pg 197 on the manual shows how to get tho the advanced diagnostic mode.

take lanyard off of the post.
press start button 5 times
you should hear one short beep and one long beep
put the lanyard back on the post
press start button
engine should start
if it beeps the manual gives what each beep sequence means and how to repair.

Re: SeaDoo Problem

before buying a new key try to take a pencil eraser ad clean the metal insinde the key with it, also clean the dess post. if these are not perfectly clean they will not work. some other things to try are

1. if you have a buddy with a seadoo put his key on and it should be one solid beep, indicating incorrect key
2. if still no beep ground the wire off the temp sensor and the beeper should go off, if not then your buzzer may be bad.
3. check dess post, service manual should have procedure for this test.
4. as an absolute last option your MPEM may be bad. if this is the case then there are options out there for repairing the MPEM, or you can pick up a used one for 200-300.

there is another forum called seadooforum.com that has a lot of people that really know there stuff on seadoos, i have learned alot over there
