When you guys decarb with the seafoam spray, do you use one can per cylinder or one can for the entire engine? 1983 Johnny 90 V4

Thanks
Dave

Re: Seafoam decarb

I have seen posted here many times 1 can per cylinder but it seems like an aweful lot of cleaning per cylinder.I usually mix a cocktail of 1 can Seafoam additive to a gal of properly mixed fuel in a portable tank and let that run through the motor while at idle.Charlie

Re: Seafoam decarb

Thanks for the reply CC
I have seen the cocktail method in the FAQ section. I just thought that a fogging spray might be more effective as I am not sure how long ago a decarb was done(I have only had the motor a little over a year). I thought 4 cans sounded like a lot also...that's why I was asking.

Re: Seafoam decarb

I used the method descibed by charlie except I ran mine thru the motor at cruising speed under load. Then shut it down when it was about gone and let it sit for a half hour. Worked very well for me. I like the idea of the fuel/seafoam mix being evenly dispersed throughout all cylinders at the same time to avoid a richer/leaner condition if applied individually to different carbs. No scientific data to support this, just a gut feeling.

Re: Seafoam decarb

There was a post on this a while ago and I remember someone stating NOT to go over idle speed while cocktailing.I dont recall why but after I drink a cocktail myself I usually like to throttle up a little. ;) Charlie ;)

The most effective way to do it is to mix it with the gas as directed on the can and then spray it in the carbs. Spraying something in the carbs (anything) is an extremely effective way to remove carbon. Alot of people use water. It causes a temperature change in the carbon which quickly breaks it off. Spraying Deep Creep (aerosol seafoam) in the carbs is MUCH more effective than only running it in the gas.

That's what I'm asking ZmOz, One can(aerosol spray) per engine or per cylinder?
Or I guess I could just buy the stuff and follow directions ;)

Thanks again

Dave

One can should be plenty...that's all I use.

charlie- I have a Merc 2+2 so I had to run it higher than idle to get the mix into the bottom two carbs/cylinders. The theory you were referring to is that at higher rpm the seafoam could reduce the lubricating properties of the oil/fuel mix. I certainly wouldn't want to run it WOT on the seafoam mix.

Re: Seafoam decarb

83 V4 never been decarbed use 2 cans engine tuner, or 2 cans of sea foam, one can thru the engine, 1 can in the 4 spark plug holes. Direct injected engine different. I have only done a few of these, the last one I did used 3 cans, engine tuner, under 100 hours, brand x oil low rpms most of time. If you could discover a way to use the carbon as lubricant, you would never need oil for this engine. I like 1500 rpms on some engines, 2000 rpms other engines.

Re: Seafoam decarb

The instructions on the can say something like spray 3 or 4 times till motor sounds labored then spray till motor stalls out, problem is with one can it is hard to stall out a V-4, with 2 cans you can usually stall it. I also go through the plug holes too. whoever said a can for each cylinder must have been a seafoam salesman. I can't even imagine how I would be able to aim and spray four cans at one time. Two I can manage.

I also think one or two cans per engine should be enough....but if the carbon is still coming off why not use a little more.

Re: Seafoam decarb

Thanks a lot guys, I'm on my way to NAPA
Can't wait to see what kind of crud comes out. I talked to the guy I got the motor from and he said he had never done a decarb(he had the motor for 6/8 years). I'll probably run it in the bay so I don't smoke out the neigbors.

Dave
