As many of you know I am very sceptical that Seafoam works as advertised in regards to removing carbon. I also said in the other thread that when I ran into a engine that needed a decarb that I would tear it down and take before and after photos. Well I found a good test canidate. A early 80's Johnson 9.9 that has never been decarbed and has a ton of time on it.
No if some one can help me post the photos I will run this test in 2 weeks. I have already pruchased the seafoam. it would also help to know how I shoudl goa bout adding the seafoam. Through the carbs or mix it with the gas?

Re: Seafoam test!

You should use Deep Creep, the aerosol foaming version of seafoam, sprayed into the carbs. Anything sprayed into the carbs will have much more of an effect that something highly diluted by gas.

Sign up at www,photobucket.com (free). Download a pic to it. Now, under that pic will be a URL (can't remember, but its a the first line). Right click and copy (it will turn blue). Hold that copy or post to notepad so ya don't lose it. Now go to Iboats and post (or quick reply). First experiment. Use full reply form. Click image. A box will appear. Paste the URL there. Hit okay. Now preview post and see if the pic appears...if not, keep trying. Problems, post them.

Definately use the Deep Creep, but if I'm de-carbing an old motor that hasn't been de-carbed in a while, I'll use the liquid Sea Foam first mixed with a gallon of gas and oil. It really does a good job.

Seafoam should be mixed in the gas, and DeepCreep should be sprayed in the cylinders and allowed to soak, spray again, then fire it up and spray into carb. Use 1/2 can of deep creep on that little motor.

2 different posts in the faq forum detail procedure.

I dont think I have ever seen Deep Creep. I got the can of Sea Foam at Napa. Does Napa also sell Deep Creep?

Yep. I've seen Deep Creep at many different parts stores that don't sell the Seafoam...

I've bought both Seafoam and Deep Creep at Carquest, for what it's worth.

Just in case you don't believe SeaFoam works as advertised, I'd suggest you put something under the engine if you intend to run it in your driveway. The results will be immediately obvious and the stain on the driveway will be a long term reminder.

You must use deep creep to get best results.
I can tell you right now you are wasting your time it does work ben! I have seen inside results.
And be sure and make pic's of the mess it makes. and then try to convence everybody where it came from. FWIW I have seen some carbon so bad that it had to be vated off.

P.S. Ben if you don't find any Deep Creep I will be glad to send you a can. Tim

Ben,
I can't wait to see your results. I read your post where you said seafoam would be no good for a decarb.
We did your test on a little merc(2 of 4) The 2 with deep creep were very clean. It removed most all carbon off #1 & #2. #3 & #4 look like the rocky Mts.
Now who's decard are you trying to sell?
I don't have a cam but when I get one I can do the same again. Floyd

Re: Seafoam test!

I am not, nor have I sold anything of this nature, nor do I ever intend to.

Partially burnt oil oozing out the exhaust proves nothing. Dump a quart of any oil into a gallon of gas and you will get alot of smoke and oily spooge coming out the exhaust.
We shall see after i run this test what it looks like. I will be taking many before and after photos of the exhasut ports, cylinder heads and pitons domes. I have located some deep creep so that is the product I will use bast on the reccomendations here.

Re: Seafoam test!

instead of looking at piston domes and heads take us some good shots of the ring grooves. the pistons and heads actually like a small amount of carbon. the ring grooves do not.
I have a crabber with over 13,000 gallons of fuel burned with no decarb. will be interesting to see the rings oneday when it comes apart. I built it in 98 and its still running along.

Re: Seafoam test!

Let's see some compression numbers and GPS speed tests (loaded and light load) before and after the decarb. Even if the test results are the same, its no proof SeaFoam doesn't work. It simply means the engine was not badly carboned to start with.

Upinsmoke:

Even though Ben and I dont see eye to eye on many things, I believe that the test he performs will be as unbiased as can be and there will be lots of before and after data.

Regardless of what he finds, Im going to keep using it as I have had great success with the product as many others here have. I dont really follow directions, and tend to let the engine set overnight when I can. Makes all the difference in the world.
