What is seafome and how can it help an older motor or one that has been sitting up for a while?

Re: Seafome??

Well,

you're going to get a lot of differing opinions.

Seafoam is basically a mixture of Naphtha and oil. AKA "Snake oil"

It only benefits the people who sell it by increasing their profits.

It's right up there with Marvel Mystery Oil.

People feel better when they use it. If it makes you feel better use it.

Interesting post.
Obviously, your opinion of Sea Foam isn't very high.
Do you have some information that supports that low opinion or is it just that, an opinion?

My interest in the supporting information is because I use the product as a fuel stabilizer. While I have not had any fuel related problems, I don't feel real comfortable using a fuel stabilizer that is described as "Snake Oil".

Re: Seafome??

There is nothing in it that stabilizes fuel. It does have isopropyl alcohol in it that will act as a gas drier...but so do other products that do the same thing but cheaper.

That's not real encouraging to hear.
My use of it as a fuel stabilizer resulted from reading the last paragraph in this piece of sales literature from Sea Foam.

http://www.seafoamsales.com/motorTuneUpConsumer.htm

What's even more frustrating/irritating is that I called Sea Foam and specifically asked them about using it as a fuel stabilizer in place of Sta-Bil. I was told that it would work fine for that purpose.

Thanks, (I think:)), for the enlightenment.
Since I am about to use the last of my Sea Foam, it sounds like I would be better off to purchase some Sta-Bil.
While our boats get used fairly often, some of the gas still sometimes remains in the tanks for a few weeks. I use some stabilizer pretty regularly in case we don't use up a tank of gas.

No experience here with SeaFoam.

I've used Sta-bil with good results as a fuel stabllizer.
My favorite decarbonizer/injector cleaner is Techron... the concentrated stuff, not the diluted mix.

Another enlightenment. I never knew there was a concentrated and a diluted Techron.
Where do you buy "concentrated" Techron and how do you tell which version the store is selling.

Re: Seafome??

Yes. My opinion of most snake oils is not very high. I don't like products that are promoted by testimonials and/or multi-level marketing.

Techron (trade name, owned by Chevron-Texaco... also known as a polyether amine) on the other hand is an over the counter and refinery additive has been actually shown to do something.

There are others.

People who sell these additives at retail are probably not the right people to ask how effective they are ......They are probably somewhat biased and certainly not qualified to answer technical questions about the products.

http://www.colin-houston.com/MULTICLIENT_STUDIES/gas_additives/gas_additives.htm

Chevron and Texaco market Techron as an after market additive approved by the CARB and the EPA.

I have never used aftermarket gasoline additives and have never had a problem (another testamonial!! :D)

Ask and ye shall receive...

The 'Techron' brand is sold in two forms... one is the 'Pro-Guard with Techron' product line.

The other Techron bottle is the 'concentrate'....

Gotcha, thanks.
Both links are for the same product, but I was able to figure out the difference by doing a little google research.

Re: Seafome??

I had a part time job washing the Chevron turcks at one of their refuelling plants. The "Techron" that they add to the gas sold at the pump, actually comes in 5gal. Drums, and it is added to the truck in amounts varying on which grade of gasoline is being delivered. I think it was actually only one 5gal drum per truck, so either the stuff they had was super potent, or you dont really need much.

Re: Seafome??

A local Chevron driver told me that when he loads at the Arco refinery in Anacortes, Wa (Formerly the Chevron-Texaco, and Texaco refinery), they simply have a valve that's turned on to add the Chevron proprietary additive (Techron) in the correct amount to the (Arco) gasoline as it goes into the truck

It's my understanding that all gasolines get Polyester amine added to gasoline....Chevron calls it "Techron".
