Just bought a Seagull Silver Century last night and tried it out today. I was pretty excited about it but immediately blown because it started after 10 or so pulls and started grinding (not sure where). It only made the severe grinding noise when it was in gear so I'm thinking its the lower unit. I couldn't do much because I also noticed that the engine isnt flowing any water. I've read up on some forums but havent gotten any great ideas. Where do I even start?

ok....on the money there!! is there gear oil in the lu ( 140wt)? i have a silver century clutch drive also, extra long shaft, havent run it in water yet, but my other little gull would not pump water until i back flushed it with a jerry rigged line pushed into the " tell tale"....still wont pump in a barrel with the prop mounted.

Well great news--I blew compressed air by the stream outlet and holes on the shaft, fired it up and BAM water came pouring out in a solid great flow! Pretty excited about that little feat.

Yeah mine is also the long shaft (its really too long for my little 14ft and sits about a ft below the hull). I did take the backing off of the lower unit and its got plenty of bad milky white oil... when I get a few minutes, I want to completely extract all of the white oil and see what im looking at. I did see the shaft gear and clutch gear (not sure of exact name) are not connecting properly but not ruined from the grinding. I think this is my culpret but am not entirely sure.
