Seagull Impellor Backflush?

My old British Seagull 2 hp outboard on my sailboat is not pumping water and overheated. It runs fine still, but I'm told the impellor in the water pump is likely fine, but to backflush it to get it "unstuck". HOW DO YOU BACKFLUSH THIS? Thanks.

One way is to try placing a hose with some pressure directly to the "tell tail" where the water leaves the block and hand turning the motor in the reverse direction very slowly. Failing this it's a simple job to strip and replace the impellor. Which would be prefferential!<br />Ross
