I have a small seagull no SJP 350 39
ABOUT 1960 I think?
AND I CANT GET A SPARK ON IT
Tried turning engine whilst touching the plug to the head and block
cleaned points and field coils
NOT SURE WHAT TO DO
Any ideas

Oh! is there a chart to find the age of these engines from the serial numbers?

Regards ,

Re: seagull

Its not dead, its just resting.
old seagulls never die, they are bullet proof.
the points and contacts need to be nice and clean and also the condesor if it it has one.
ive known these to completely corrode away before now on seagulls.

My little 40 plus sat in the garage for just over 10 years un-used, even with dirty filthy old petrol in it the liitle beast burst into life on the 3rd pull.
Sometimes these do hibernate for short spells, but once shown a oily rag and a bit of fresh juice they get back to normal in no time.
in the uk these little engines can be found on small 7ft dinghy's to 50 ft gin palace cruisers with tenders and sail boats that cruise the ocean's.
and no matter how far out to see you go, there is always someone with a seagull out there fishing !!!!!!!
ive known them to be 10 miles out, now at 4mph (if your lucky) thats a long way out .

like said above have another check on the points and the rotor and any connections you can find.

Re: seagull

is the cork gasket under the coil, where it attaches to the plug wire, intact and dry? cant remember if both the mk1 and mk2 ignitions have the gasket tho. and the motor is probably a 10:1 mix.....unless it has the upgraded metering needle in the carb, then it would be 24:1.
