Ahoy, Ten.

Your question is not clear. Are you talking about the drive shaft (vertical) or the prop shaft (horizontal?

Hi Ten
With the water pump removed, the driveshaft will slide out of the L/U. If the driveshaft slides out with the pump housing installed you will need a new pump housing, or possibly just a new drive pin for the empeller. Check L/U oil for water intrusion. The preform vac and presure test to determine if you have leaks. Odds are pretty good that you'll need to reseal your L/U. Do the tests first, no sense messing with it unbless leaks are found. Quite a bit of sludgey oil here is normal espiecaly when run in a test tank. There is no t-stat on this model, So the cooling system is fairly stright forward. Empeller, empeller housing. drive pin, wear plate, and water tube gromets all must be in good shape. Also check and clean the casting before instalation of pump components.

Re: Seahorse 18 oil in and around water pump

On my 58 18hp Johnson, Yes the shaft would lift out from the lower unit.

In fact the shaft sort of did the rising snake from a basket, as I applied pressure to the removed and in a vise for repair lower unit.

With such a rich oil mix and only partialy complete combustion these motors exibit, a lot of goo in the barrel is normal. Even during a day of putting here and there and idleing, a lot of that goo builds in the midsection only to come out as little globish oily gooballs that are seen on occasion behind the boat.
