Re: seahorse

I can already tell you it's a 1956 or 57. No idea what horsepower. The model and serial numbers are on a tag on one of the brackets where the motor clamps onto the boat. If no tag, look for a welch plug on the powerhead about the size of a nickel with numbers on it. Also look for a plate under the hood latch, but I think those started in 58.

Re: seahorse

'56 was nearly all "maroon" (Holiday Bronze) but for the little "wings". The '57 looked like a maroon motor trimmed in white. The '58 Sea Horse looked like a white motor trimmed in maroon.

All 3 year's 35's used the same waterpump impeller and ignition parts.

Re: seahorse

2 years ago, I bought a '56 30hp for $275. It looked like it'd been dredged from the river bottom. However, it was complete and pumped 140 lbs of compression on both cylinders. Rough appearance was only cosmetics. If it has good compression (over 100 lbs) I think it should be in the $250-$300 range. It all depends on condition.

56 30 hp.These are great old motors that still have excellent parts availability.Bullet proof with a little care.Nice low end grunt.Simple to work on.
A little thirsty.I plan to go back to a 56 Tiller Javlin For my 56 Crestliner
17ft utility.Replacing a 65 Merc 500 an excellent motor as well.

Re: seahorse

Last week I bought 2 x 1957 electric 35hp's for C$100. Both have compression but I have not tested them yet so no idea what I actually got other than they're not seized. As I'm used to smaller engines I have no idea by pulling on a 35 how much compression it actually has...
