First time out in my new '72 Sea King 35hp the cover blew off and I quickly put out a carb fire. But starting it up in a trash can at home...it started right up. I know nothing about motors. But I don't want to get ripped off when I take it to mech Tuesday. Suggestions please.

check float setting on carb.if it is to high ,it could have backfired and caused your problem.also check to see if there is any debris in the needle and seat of the carb.
