Seaking 5Hp help!

Hello, I'm brand new to the site and about to show how little I know about boating...

I recently bought an old 12' aluminum boat with a 5 HP seaking motor that he claimed "ran last year".

I've spent the last few days poring over old posts and have learned to identify it as a 1957 made by Gale for Wards and that it takes a 24:1 fuel mixture.

Now I'm trying to get it started...

I pulled the plugs and have spark and it seems to be getting fuel because it "wants to", but run.

What are the initial settings supposed to be for the high and low carb adjustments?

Any other suggestions?

If it uses the ubiquitous small OMC carb then 3/4T out on Hi & 1 1/4T out on the Lo speed needle will get you in the ballpark.
If it's the old Gale carb with the primer lever on the high speed needle then a half turn out should do the trick. Unless you've fiddled with it the low speed setting (on the RH side of the carb body) should be good enough to get it running.

Other suggestions? You bet! Your motor should have the OMC 'universal magneto'. Look at the coils! If they are a shiny, hard black plastic then you have the old style mag system and they seldom need anything except TLC.
Conversely the 'universal magneto' universally needs new coils unless someone has already replaced them. If they don't look brand new just replace them BEFORE you pull out all of your hair.

Based on a posting for a 12HP I found on here I had guessed the 5 would be close and had them set at 1 1/2 and 1 turns last night.

I came home tonight and, following the same steps as last night, she fired right up on the 3rd pull! I'm guessing I had it flooded.

She ran steady in the barrel, pumps a nice stream of water and shifted into forward and reverse good.

Now I just need to install the new hitch on the kia, and register the boat and get her on the water for some fishing finally.
