I recently picked up a 62 Sea King 5HP for free. It is a complete motor and appears to be in great shape aside from a broken pull cord and looking like it has sat in a garage for 25+ years.

I realize it was made by Gale, so OMC parts are what I should be looking for. since it appears Gale is ignored in my Seloc manual (I know, its all I have for now) and all info I am finding does not list a 5HP Johhny/Rude for 1962 only a 5.5HP. what engine should I be referencing this to? the lower unit looks identical to my 65 Johnson 6HP.

Also, How do I determine the correct length and diameter on the pull cord? it is rather old and freyed and it appears the P.O. cut the rope as well. I see 4 different lengths and two sizes (.130 and 5/32") listed in my manual.

At this point, being it is a free outboard, Im just wanting to put a rope on it, squirt some oil in the cyl's let it sit and see if it will will turn over. if it does I want to check the compression. if that checks out then Ill go through it.

It takes 70" of 772577 (5/32") starter rope. Actually, whatever it will hold is the length it takes. You might have to trim a bit off of that 70".

Reference it to the 5.5 E/J motors.Yours has a split crankcase similar to the E/J motors. Lower unit, gearcase carb, ignition are the same.
If you check out ebay many vendors have excellent interchange info.
My 55 5D11 was easy to figure out coils and pump.Mine has a some what different power head comepletely different carb, intake and throttle components.
