I acquired a Seaking 7hp recently. Have identified it as a Clinton J700 and found a repair manual for it. After sitting for over 20 years that I know of, a new set of points and it fired after the second pull. My question is what should the tell tale be like? Water only cools the lower leg and exhaust according to the manual. I tried to remove the lower gearcase to inspect the impeller and could not get it off. The book was very vague about this can any one help. Should the tell tale squirt like a watercooled powerhead or what??

You'll only get a fine mist out of the relief holes in the back. There is a clip on the leading edge of the gearcase that has to be removed to get at the nut it hides. There will be that nut and one screw to get that gearcase off.

Found the screw and nut, but the gearcase only moves about 1/2 inch then acts like the shaft is stuck. coult the splines on the shaft be corroded enough to cause this if so what to do?? When I ran it in the bucket with water, it seemed like it was spitting a little water from the relief holes. I let it run with the prop engaged at WOT for about 5 minutes and checked the temp of the lower leg and the water in the bucket and they were both cool. when it was running, water would splash on the bottem of the powerhead and it would sizzle a little. Do you think it is getting too hot?? I have not had it on the boat (12ft flat bottem aluminum jon boat)in the water yet.

Re: Seaking 7HP impeller

I've never done an impeller replacement on a Clinton like yours, but the rule of thumb on outboards where the impeller cools the powerhead is that you should be able to touch the powerhead near the cylinder without getting burned. If so, the impeller is doing its job. If you can touch the lower leg comfortably while its running and you see some water out of the relief holes, the impeller is working. Still, it might not be a bad idea to examine and possibly replace the old impeller...just good preventive maintenance.
