Hello all,
I just picked up a seaking by chrysler engine. The model # is VWB 52119C the serial # is 128x 24458. Now heres the kicker, the cover says 9.9, but the tag on the side says 15BHP at 5100 rpm. So is this a 9.9 hp or a 15 hp ? I also need a few parts such as the small reacoil gear, and after reading here a bit, I'd also like to install a new impeller as this has been sitting a few years. I ran the engine in a barrel for about a minute just to make sure its worth tuning up, and it seems to run just fine, and has good compression and all. The motor looks to be in great shape and is nice and clean with no leaky heads or anything on the engine . It also has what looks to be a teather type switch on it, which I had to disconnect to make run as the teather is missing. I imagine I could replace this with a toggle switch? I'd also like to find a manual to aid me in all of this.

Any help or pointers will be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
tim

Re: Seaking /Chrysler help

It appears someone put a 9.9 hood on a 82 15 hp.
You can probably find an aftermarket manual for many brands below 30 hp right here on iboats.A Chrysler only manual could probably be found on ebay.Starter gear is notorious for breaking and I think hard to find.
Tether switch is a safety device to protect you in the event of falling overboard or other misstep. Probably not a good idea to disable permately.

Re: Seaking /Chrysler help

Thanks for that info Steelspike. I bought the engine from the guy, and he said it was a 10hp, guess I got a bonus. :) Rarely happens, but cool when it does hehe. Now, if I bought a Chrysler manual, the engine I have would be the same as a standard 82 15hp Chrysler engine?
I agree about the teather switch though, I may just replace it since its all weathered and looks rough. The starter gear I may just make out of aluminum ( I own a tool and die shop) , as I have the old one..or at least the 2 pieces it broke into.

Re: Seaking /Chrysler help

Right, the manual for the 82 15 should work.
Manual may cover the 9.9 and 15.Chrysler became Force c.1985 My manual lists an 84 9.9 and 15 hp.
maybe these motors use the same part you need.
As I understand it Mercury does have some Force parts as they were in bed together until sometime in the 90s.
Make your own and maybe knock off a few extras
after you see if any are available and anyone else needs them.

Re: Seaking /Chrysler help

Some fishing spots and clubs will not allow usage or more than a 9.9 hp Since most 15 hp outboard motors are boosted 9.9 hp's some fisherman will simply put a 9.9 hp decal over the 15 hp and get away with it. Obviously you got a bonus. Surprising that the ex owner did not know about it ... he musta thought his 9.9 hp was a blast ... lol

Go to this LINK . This is a complete blowup for a 82 chrysler 15 HP starter. The gear you need should be there. Looks like it is about 8 dollars.

Re: Seaking /Chrysler help

Thanks! I definately cant make one for 8 bucks...think I'll order 2. :)

Other than that, I swapped the impeller out today, changed the lower unit gear oil, picked up a new tank, fuel line, and plugs...and the thing runs like a top! I tested it in a barrel first to make sure it was pumping, and the heads and cylinders were just barely warmer than skin temp after running for about 3-5 mins. Then I mounted it on my 14" aluminun semi V and headed for Lake Champlain. Tested it out for about an hour around a small bay. A little boggy at first, but after running fresh gas in it for a bit it cleared right up. Sure scoots that 14 foot boat around a heap better than the 5hp I had on there. Just need to get the recoil fixed now, as using a rope is kind of a PIA.

Odly enough, pecheux, The guy who runs the marina told me the same thing. Seems that most of the lakes and ponds here in the Adirondacks have a 10 HP limit as well.He said he's sold a number of 9.9 Chrysler hoods over the years, because the chassis/cover is identicle to the 15hp. No bother though, I use a 12" Grumman and the old 5hp on most of the smaller ponds. Just nice now to have a bit of speed on Lake Champlain because it always seems like you have to travel a ways to get to the good spots and the 5hp used to take forever.

Thanks again for the help. :)
