Help.
I have a Seaking 5.0 hp, air cooled, motor made by Clinton. Model # 5055106A, Serial 1480536, Type XTV50505A, with a Tillotson carb.

I put an impulse fuel pump on it and cleaned the carb. I can now make it run seemingly for a long time but not idle very well nor run very well when shifted into gear and the throttle is opened up. I also adapted a pull cord from a lawn mower that seems to work well. The transmission shifts ok.

I am hoping for any or all of several things:
1. Any idea of the year?
2. Why won't it run at high and low speeds?
3. Is there a place to get parts?
4. How do I put fluid in the lower unit?
5. Why does exhaust come out of two places? (blow off from the impluse fuel pump, maybe?)

Re: Seaking, wards, clinton help

I'm confused. I don't know of any of those Clinton-based Sea Kings that have any sort of gear shift. As far as I know, they're all direct drive.

As for your running question, it could be a lot of things...most likely a clogged high speed jet on that Tillotson.

The exhaust is supposed to come out of two places. Two holes about halfway up the leg will spray a mist of water and exhaust. The main exhaust comes out just above the prop.

Re: Seaking, wards, clinton help

It has forward, neutral, and reverse. It seems to work well.

Any idea of the year from the numbers I gave?
Could you tell me what the adjustment is for on the very bottom, center of the carberator bowl is for? Is it the highspeed?

I really appreciate your help on this. I am totally in the dark on this engine but am having fun problem solving so far.

Re: Seaking, wards, clinton help

In my aftermarket manual Clinton/Sea King production ends in 84.While my manual goes to 89.
50505 is 77 or 80 It indicates Clinton model K 550.
Parts will be pretty difficult as Clinton has been gone for some time. You might try a net search.
My manual says no Gearcase service info was available at publication ,1989.
In blow up picture there appears to be a vent and drain screw on the port side of the lower unit.
Adjustment on center bottom of the bowl is the high speed adjust.initial setting is 1 1/2 turns out from gently bottomed.initial idle setting is 2 turn out.If a major adjustment is needed you may have to unhook the knobs.Final adjustment is made running in gear. There may be a idle speed adjust as well.
If it still refuses to run right after you adjust you may have to be sure the carb is clean and float is adjusted right.
Most motors have a primary underwater exhaust and a secondary exhaust relief port on the upper leg.The motor has a water cooled exhaust leg some water should come out of the relief port at idle. You should have the motor leg well below water when you attempt to run it.If you run it out of water you will ruin the pump.

Re: Seaking, wards, clinton help

Yours is a 1980 model. The actual model number begins with KTV, not XTV.

You can probably get some parts from discount-marine-parts.com. Impellers, carb kits, and the like. Other stuff will be tougher to find, since Wards isn't in the parts business any more. You might try posting an ad at aomci.cor.

As the previous poster said, the center screw at the bottom of the float bowl is the high speed jet adjustment. There should be another adjuster on the lefthand side of the carb. That's the low speed jet.

Odds are that you need a carb kit for your motor, and that's available at the site I mentioned. It's a tillotson carburetor and parts are available.

Re: Seaking, wards, clinton help

You guys are good! Thank you.

Most likely, I burned up the pump. I thought that "air cooled" meant totally air cooled so I ran it for some time without water while tinkering and doing the happy dance.

Thank you for the info and now I start on the lower unit.

Re: Seaking, wards, clinton help

I would like to share some information I found last year on Clinton outboards. The Clinton Engine Products Company still has many new parts available for the old Clintons. I sent them a list of things I needed and they had everything on the list except ignition coils and the old red 3 gallon remote fuel tanks. They still had gaskets, breaker point assemblies for $7.50 , fuel pump diaphrams $2.95 , fuel fitting that plugs onto the J8 & J9 and probably other models for $19.50 , water pump impellers $19.90 , reed valves $3.60. Just got a carb kit from them for K550...Even new piston rings and owners manuals. Am told ignition coils are available from Discount Marine Parts at phone # 906-466-2180

* Please note. I wrote this guide in January 2008 so prices may have changed a bit.
