Seal Question 1955-6 Mark 58

I Have An Old 1955 Or 1956 Mark 58 That I Am Restoring And In The Process, I Removed The Gear Shift Rod Seal. Unfortunately, It Took Some Time To Chase Down A Replacement Seal And Now That I Am Ready To Put It Back Together, I Can't Remember Which Way The Seal Goes. I'm Hoping There Are Some Old Timers Out There Who Can Tell Me If I Am Sealing The Gear Oil In Or The Water Out. My Recollection Is That I Am Sealing Gear Oil In But I Can't Remember For Sure. Additionally, I Have Yet To Pin Down A Year For This Engine. The Serial Number Is 1154239. I Have Recently Been Told That It Is A 1955 Or 1956 Based On The Smaller Crankshaft Diameter. Can Anyone Help Me, As It Is Turning Into A Real Problem In Determining What Parts Will Fit.

Depends on the shift shaft bushing, old style with no spring in the seal, lips up. New style with spring in the seal, lips down. Mark 58s were only built in 1958 starting number was 1139538 and ended 1195069, the small taper crank came from a very early mark 55
