Does anyone know were I could find an "overhaul" kit for a '89 Force 115? I am mechanically minded but new to boating. I early this spring I bought a '89 bass boat that I have fallen in love with. Everything has been running fine except that it doesn't idol well. At close inspection I found that the lower unit is dripping some oil. I have dropped the lower unit and looked the parts over and things "look fine" except that there was oil on top of the lower unit were the shaft comes out of the gear case.

I would like to "overhaul" this gearing but I will make sure that I have a kit with all the needed parts first. Can anyone help me with advice on where to look for this or expertise on what to do with my leak?

Thanks,

These engines use oil mixed with the gas and some of it passes through the engine unburned. The exhaust comes out on top of the lower unit so that could be a source of oil.

Before you jump to confusions, remove the drain plug and check the condition of the lower unit oil. If a little free water comes out, or if the oil is milky in color, then water is getting in the gearcase and seal replacement is indicated. If the oil is "clear" and no free water is present, then the seals are OK and don't need service.

While you have the lower unit off, don't even bother to check--just automatically change the water pump impeller. If the old one turns out to be good, save it as a spare.

I don't think there is a "seal kit" per-se, you just buy the seals you need. Any Mercury dealer should be able to get them for you. ---And buy a Clymers Manual. The exploded drawings are reasonably self explanatory.
