Sealant for a intake gasket?

I found out that I have a intake gasket leak on my 1981 35 HP Johnson. Bought new Sierra gaskets and put them on, still have intake leak. Is there a sealant that should be used with the gaskets? Also the Sierra gaskets come with 2 per set....should I double them? The factory 78 service manual for a 35 hp lists OMC gasket sealing compound, is there a equivalent for this? I have also read that you should not use gasket sealer compound on any of the gas circuit. Confused as what direction I should go?

Thanks,

Don't use any type of sealer on intake gaskets. Check the surfaces your trying to seal for warps or dings.

Well I am going to tear it back down today and check the surfaces and if needed work them down with some 400 grit sandpaper on a flat surface. We will see what happens.

I hate to say this, but have you tried the OEM gaskets ? Have heard some bad vibs about after market ones.

No I have not tried the OEM gaskets, but they might be worth the couple of dollars extra. I do like the OEM carb kits better, they have the stainless needles without the rubber on the tips, that I am hearing bad things about. I did see several pretty deep scratches in the aluminum on the reed plate and the intake...was working on getting them out on a flat surface when I ran out of time. I hope to pick up where I left off and hopefully get it back tomorrow between work and Church. If this does not fix it I will be ordering OMC gaskets...I may go ahead and order them anyway tomorrow, just in case and I have another 35 in the garage.
