Sealants

Hi All,

I am in the process of reassemble of a 115hp (83 Evinrude block) xflow and have a sealant question.

The book calls for Gel Seal II to be used on the crankcase mating surfaces (smooth seal area), can I use High Tack on this or is there something better to use?

I would use the gel seal or yamabond type sealer. I think the high tack would harden and be brittle and possibly cause an air leak, where as the correct sealers stay somewhat plyable for a better seal.

Any of the "Anaerobic Gasket Makers" will work. My last rebuild, I used a Permatex product from Autozone. Be sure all of the of the sealant is scaped off and wipe down the mating surfaces with acetone.

I used locktite 515 Anaerobic Gasket Maker had it on the shelf from auto repairs. It shouldent matter what brand you as DargelJohn said.

permatex aviation grade formula is the only one approved by OMC. for warranty work on their outboards according to our local omc shop.

Permatex Aviation is not a recommended sealant by OMC or its new owners BRP. That is not to say it won't work, but it is not to be used for warranty motors and it does not carry Johnson's or Evinrude's approval.

Use the correct Gel Seal II as other formulas of Gel Seal contains fillers and those can keep the crankcase halves from mating securely.

To put the crankcase halves together where GelSeal is called for, use:

This is equivalent to GelSeal.

You cannot use Permatex Aviation Formagasket for this application.

Thanks daselbee and others for the information. I purchaed the permatex product last night and should have this engine back together today. I appreciate the help I always receive on this site!
