When I reinstall the carpeted wood floor panels in my boat how do I seal the screw holes. I don't want a blob of sealant on the carpet at every screw hole. Any suggestions? Also what to do about the staple holes?

Are the panels going to be carpted before you install them? If not when you seal the wood with glass and resin and tab it into the sides it will all be sealed and ready for carpet when finished.

carpeted wood floor panels? hard to imagine.

most boats have the carpet glued down.

why will you have staple holes too?

This is an aluminum boat. The floor is plywood panels covered with carpet then screwed to the aluminum stringers. The plywood is wrapped in carpet and stapled on the back side.

O.K. you got me confused here. You've carpeted the panels and stapled on the back side and now you want to install them by screwing them to stringers. If that's correct then I don't understand the worry about the staples unless you didn't use monel or stainless staples in which case they will rust out in a year.

As for the screws in the deck just let the glue dry for two weeks and it will be hard enough so as not to be a problem. When you screw the deck down the screws will pull through the carpet and the backing and it will close back over the top of them.

I'm sorry I really didn't explain very well. My concern is water penetrating the wood panels through the screw and staple holes. I spent hours covering the wood with epoxy and fiberglass and don't want it to rot.

OK. Just seal them up with a little 3M 5200 and you'll be fine. I just put a little on the screw threads so as not to make a mess, it doesn't take much to do the job.

This is a first I've heard...But...

Since you have gone to great lengths to seal your deck panels, as said the 5200 will seal the screw holes...I bet that carpet rots waaaaay before your glassed wood does..

Think about self adhesive velcro to hold carpet to wood deck. screw the wood down then velcro the carpet to it. no staples no screws thru the carpet. Change it any time you like without lifting the deck.

Only problem with that is that now you have to have all of the carpet edges bound or it will unravel on you. We do a similar thing with our Lino decks except we use snaps to hold the carpets down.

you maybe could try the 5200 on the threads and use those screw caps not finish washers but screw caps. You put it on the screw then screw down but don't drive it into the wood just flush with top of wood then the cap covers the screw head. They are low profile and come in a number of colors then if you had to pull up a floor panel you wouldn't have to search for buried screws.

Use 5200 as said above a little will go a long way as for the aluminum dont have to worry about it wont rust.
