2 coats of kilz primer, sealer and 2 coats of acrylic latex.I was going to put a coat of resin on the underside but i was told only resin on plywood was useless.working on a budget to rebuild this 16 ft trihull

Just don't let that plywood stay wet...

Kilz primer and acrylic latex are even more worthless than poly resin... Though better than nothing. Household water bourne/soluble paints have little or no place on a boat. Some oil-based paints can be OK, but still only offer minimal protection from moisture intrusion.

the original floor appeared to have no coating of any sort on the underside just plain 3/8 plywood.the original waterlogged foam has been removed and replaced with dry foam that shouldnt absorb water.hopefully if i can keep it dry the ply will last a lot longer.the original floor lasted 38 yrs

R U sure it was the original floor? If it was, it was prolly Marine Grade Plywood. Is yours? If you Prep, Resin and Glass the top of your Deck properly and Maintain it correctly and do not allow water penetration from the topside or get any punctures in the hull to allow water from below, then Yeah it might last 3 or 4 decades. If it's Garaged or covered every day it's not in use that would help too.

I am sure its the original and no i dont have marine grade.I am hoping to get 15 yrs out of it.The only time it will be in the water is when i go fishing the rest of the time it will be parked in my garage.anyone know where to purchase carbosil and what the mixture ratio of carbosil to pint of resin would be?what are the thoughts on using bondo as it is polyester based?I have a 12 ft aluminum flat boat and when it sprung numerous leaks i applied bondo to the leaking rivets. Then applied fiber and poly over the bondo and it adhered very well.

Cabosil can be purchased here...www.uscomposites.com. NO set mixing ratio, just add and mix until you get to the thickness of mayonaise or creamy peanut butter. Bondo is not recommended for Marine use due to the fact that over time it will absorb water which causes it to delaminate from the substrate, and it is much more expensive than making your own. You will also need to purchase some 1/4" Chopped Milled Fibers. I'd start with 5 qts of Cabosil and a 1 lb of milled fibers

I have attached all my floor panels to the stringers, obviously i fill all my seams and voids with pb before glassing but do i also pb the floor to the side of the hull before glassing?what is tabbing and at what point do i use this process?ive attached a pic of my floor

Re: pb questions

Welcome, Therigwelder I am no expert at boat repair but I have been learning a lot from the guys here.
Before you pb or tab in the deck to the hull did you ether epoxy or lay csm and resin on the underside of your plywood?
If not you might better. You can order stuff for your pb online US Composites is where many get theres from.;)

Make your own chopped fibers with CSM, time and scissors...

Tabbing is more or less this...

Talc is HEAVY and can absorb water- You are better off not using it. Get some cabosil from US Composites, or someone else.

You can chop glass with a pair of scissors, cut it up the tear it to smaller pieces. Or, Just order some with the cabosil. It's cheap enough. I wouldn't recommend the wife's food processor unless you've got a spare bed in the garage to sleep in :)

Re: seam,void filler

Went to a large boatyard today that also sells fiberglass supplies to buy some cabosil. The store told me that cabosil was used with epoxy resin.Since i am using poly resin they sold me granulated mill fiber(lookes like sugar). They explained to me this would be my thickening agent and would give me a far stronger bond. They seemed quite knowledgable they really took the time to explain to me how to mix the "PB", as well as applying, smoothing and correct radi for 90 deg. corners before tabbing. Thanks to everyone for your help getting me going in the right direction.

Re: seam,void filler

They kinda did not tell you the whole truth. Cabosil is used in both Poly and Epoxy. The milled fibers will give you more strength in the mix and some thickening but cabosil is much better and you really need both. I'd recommend you go back and get some cabosil. You might want to read this...

http://www.cabot-corp.com/wcm/download/en-us/fs/CAB-O-SIL%20FS%20in%20Unsat%20PES%20Resins-118548-16p-Eng.pdf

I'd print it out and take it with you when you go back to get the cabosil. Sounds like they could use the education.

wow i am really getting an education on this forum.I sure will bring this pdf to their attention.I have to go past there on my way home from work and i magine as this boat build continues they will be seeing a lot of me.Being a fabricator for a living i though fiberglassing would be a walk in the park.I think i was wrong lol
