Can anyone tell me the differences between the different SeaRay models?

I am looking at a 2004 SeaRay sport 230 hours, with wakeboard tower for $16.5k

2002 SeaRay Select with 126 hours for $13k

The seating configuration is a little different as far as the rear bench, but are there any other major differences in these models? Anyone have experience with either?

Also looking at a 2003 Chaparral 200ssi 250 hrs with tower for $16k

These are all similar in build quality correct? i know the maintenance is the most important thing.

Presuming same condition and 20' bowrider, IMO powerplant would be next most important criteria. What are the corresponding engine and outdrive configs for the above craft?

Sorry, I recognize this does not answer your question.

All bowriders and appear from pictures to be in similar condition. SeaRays both have 5.0 Mercruisers and chap has a 5.0 volvo penta I believe. unsure of the outdrives

Re: SeaRay 200 differences

Sea Ray Sports are unabashedly low quality but the good news is when new they had and continue to have a high price. The current batch of Sports is right at the bottom of the class for build weight. Dry weight is a significant indicator of the boat's build. The Selects are where Sea Ray started to attempt to think about possibly competing with Chaparral and others. My boat is identical to the 200SSI and is also a 2003 except the 200 has bow rails instead of handles and is a foot longer. What Chaparral did in the early 2000's was relatively uncommon in that they built all of their boats (except the single outlier entry level 18 footer below the SS/SSI) with the same materials, gauges, plastic seats with flow through foam material, standard glass floors, Kevlar hulls, etc, as their larger cruisers. Sea Ray seemed to get you hooked with their Toyota and hoped you'd move up to the Lexus...Chaparral gave you the Lexus and the move up is just more LOA. Chaparral today has cheapened their smaller boats with a less expensive but still popular line.
With Sea Ray, their larger boats are excellent and compete with Chaparral right at the margins but their smaller boats are overpriced and excellent for those with limited selection and or have not shopped and possibly fall to great marketing and nostalgia.

Here's a link to the 2003 full Chaparral color catalog of their SSI boats. http://forum.chaparralboats.com/publications/brochures/2003/ss_sportboats.pdf

Re: SeaRay 200 differences

The Sea Ray 205 Sport is I believe one of the most popular sport boats in the 21ft range, it's a good lake boat but pricing seems a bit high- the dash is rather sparse as are some of the finishing touches.
The select models are more of the old school luxury Sea Rays, they are nice- but even more money in general, especially new.

Both are good lake choices I'd believe.

Well the lady with the chaparral ended up giving it to her son for $5k,damn.

I'm going to check out the select as it is local, and then maybe the sport but it's a three hour drive from Reno. Just by the pictures the select does seem to have a nice dash. I'll check out the brochures when I get home from work

Bummer, but there's always another one coming on the market soon. If you are in the market for an upscale boat, you should immediately see significant differences between the Sport and the Select line. When new, I truly can't believe a single Sport has ever been sold. Even the local Sea Ray dealer that I get my winterizing done at bashes the low budget appointments and quality in the Sport line. They just started carrying Bayliners instead.

Try this link:

powerboatguide.com

Click on the Free Online Boat Reviews "button". Doesn't list all models and you can view only one at a time, but it's a great resource.

Good luck.

Re: SeaRay 200 differences

powerboatguide.com seems to mainly list larger cruiser boats as far as I can tell, but I'll chck it out more to see if they have an smaller bowriders.

how does Reinell compare to these brands? There is a 2004 Reinell 200LSE that looks to be in good shape, it priced a fair amount cheaper than the others I have looked at, but I dont know how they stack up interms of quality. Would they be on par with the chaparral/SeaRay select or more with the SeaRay sport?

Re: SeaRay 200 differences

So on an apples to apples basis sort of. The Reinell is 8'6" wide with a base 220hp with a dry weight of 2850lbs,
The 20 Foot Chap 204SSI is narrower at 8'4" and a smaller/lighter 190hp base engine weighing in at 3400lb
and the 2004 select is 21 feet at 3550lbs with an 8'5" beam and a heavier v8.

The Reinell therefore looks to be more on par with the 2004 Sea Ray 185 sport that is listed as 20 feet and 2650lbs with the lighter 190hp.
It's hard to get past the fact that dry weights are a big indicator of the quality of the boat when new.

Just looking at a hull, it is deceiving that the Reinell is 550lbs lighter with a heavier engine than the Chaparral. 550lbs is 3 adults worth of extra weight built into the dry weight. I'm betting the Reinell is the fastest though.
