i've spent the last couple hours searching here and all over the net for an answer, as i hate to bother people with questions that have already been answered, with no success, so here goes.

has anyone swapped the omc cobra setup in a late 80's bayliner for mercruiser? in process right now myself, but having serious steering linkage issues. i was told it was a direct bolt in, hooking the steering rod to the merc linkage, but it is not. i'm using an 898 series outdrive with the inner transom plate with power steering (got motor thru prop setup from one boat). the problem is, the steering cable in boat is not long enough. the large nut at end of cable comes up a couple inches short of the threaded shaft guide. i've already checked and pulled all excess available on cable, nothin doin. do i need to change out the whole steering cable or am i doing something wrong?

The cutout in the transom is the same. And that is the only thing that is the same.
Take out the OMC stuff and put in the Mercruiser stuff. That is how it's a "direct bolt in"

You need a new helm and steering cable assembly. The proper length.

Re: search challenged

Howdy,

My Bravo might be different but When I removed the King Cobra, I used the existing Teleflex steering wheel unit and cable. It was exactly the right length.....Although I think I it was a tiny bit long when the Cobra was installed.

I have the cable that came out of the 24' Bayliner that my engine and drive was removed from but it was too long. The cable matched right up with the Mercury hydraulic unit on my transom plate.

It's in excellent condition but I'll bet it's too long for your application.

I'm going to be gone from home for a couple of days. Measure yours and let me know how long you need and when I get back I'll measure it.

EDIT: I just saw your other post. If that's a 19' boat, the cable I have will be WAY too long...

Regards,

Rick
