Here is what I have, 1993 5hp (225.) prefix ,made by Mecr. I have installed new crank seals, new fuel pump diaphram, new needle and seat and new spark plug. If and when engine fires and starts it run for a short time, fuel runs out of the mouth of carb and fuel runs out exhaust on lower end. Remove spark plug and it is wet/fouled. Very good spark also. I have adjusted the float several time to no avail, float has no holes in it (non brass). Am I missing something with maybe a pulse hole in a carb gasket or with the primer etc ??????

Are you sure the fuel pump is assembled right. If the diaphram is leaking it could flood the motor though not likely out the carb.If it is a cork float it could be saturated.Have you inverted the carb and blown into the gas line in.
Is the new seat properly installed? Is the float support spring present and and installed so spring pressure helps float close the valve. Is float set for 5/16" drop between free end and flange of carb body.Throttle plate and choke plate installed properly?

New fuel pump diaphram and does not appear to be leaking, the float is of a plastic type no holes, on this carb there is no spring for float valve, I am aware of these type but doesn't the spring help with opening a inlet needle, I have checked drop like you said.Have inverted and blown into intake, inlet valve is working an not letting air in when closed.Throttle and choke plate were not removed.

Instructions in my after market manual say Float support spring is installed so spring pressure assists float in closing the inlet valve.
Is float parallel with gasket surface when inverted? It appears that 2 different carbs were used but only difference is in the fuel valve (not float valve)absent on one type.

yes, float is parrallel when inverted, I checked the Sears parts diagram and did not see spring that you mentioned.

Re: Sears 5hp carb flooding/plug fouling

My diagram is for a slightly older motor so maybe no spring.
The 225 prefix is for Chrysler/Force motors As far as I know Merc didn't make
motors for Sears. Are you sure the plastic float hasn't absorbed gas?
The plastic part not the inside. You might see if it will run if you disconnect the fuel line. Also squeeze the primer bulb until firm should get firm and not flood with moderate sqeezing pressure. Are you sure the choke is open and stays open?

Re: Sears 5hp carb flooding/plug fouling

I actually went to the Merc website and talked to a lady there and she looked up parts on there parts computer, which incidently there part numbers and Sears numbers are the same, She then forwarede me Merc dealers that had the parts, i.e. seals and carb kits in stock. I was also on a Tanaka site and they showed info that the 225 series was by Merc. But enough of that, I will look at float agian, maybe it did become "gas soaked" for better terms. When I have squeezed the primer bulb gas DOES come out the mouth of carb only after two pumps. choke is visible an it does not close on it's own. Thanks Stuart.

I'm surprised.I can't recall any modern major builder supplying motors to a retailer.lots of the little sisters,West Bend,Chrysler,Gale ,Eska ,Clinton.
tonaka,Force etc.Wonder why would Merc supply their motors when they had Force under their wing?
I do believe Merc is a source for Force parts. Perhaps as you give Sears numbers it simply brings up Force parts??My info is incomeplete but I think the Force uses a Champ. L86 plug. The Merc.NGK BP7HS-10.Force uses a breaker point ign.Coil under fltwheel.Merc a CD ign.
