Sears 7 HP exhaust leak from shifter

Hello, I just picked up an outboard M# 217.58531. It runs but really smokes.
Ordered a carb kit from Discount Marine to get her in tune but haven't recieved it yet. Noticed a fair amount of smoke seems to be coming from around the shifter. If it is a bad gasket how big a pain is it to replace? I don't want to get to deep into this thing. Hoping for a quick fix. Any of you Sears/Eska guys got any advice for a newbie?

i dont know alot, but i will buy it from you if you want to get rid of it. will give you 200$$ i have one of these and would love to get my hands on another is there is one available. mine runs great very little smoke, but i need a hood.

Tex, that's a generous offer seeing as how you've never laid eyes on it, but not interested in selling just yet. I am in the middle of building a plywood boat and want to see what this baby can do. I also own a '64 Johnson 9.5 and '94 Gamefisher 15 but I think they may be too big for my project boat.

please contact me if this motor needs to leave your hands. i will be more than happy to take her, keep me posted on how your boat turns out. pics of the project would be cool too. i also have a 7 hp eska, i think i have already told you that, and it pushed my decked 14ft jon boat great, but i may step up to a 10 hp in the next 3 years, but 7 is great forme rightnow. keep me posted on the boat and let me know if you want some cash for that motor

I have a Sears 7hp air cooled o/b model 217/58531 that I'm willing to sell for $300.00 obo. It runs and it's
all there. I bought the engine with a fiber glass boat and I think the engine is too small for the boat.
