Sears 9.9 Gamefisher giving me the blues

So, I bought this used 9.9 gamefisher (first mistake?) Motor seemed fine on first trip, started like a top and ran good. Second trip, got about 1/4 mile into it and it started to pulse and then died completely-will not start! Took it home, pulled one of the spark plugs to find it cracked in half-just the porcelin. Replaced both plugs (gap at .035)-tried to pull it for fire up (dry, intended to stop immediately if turn over)and, nothing. Checked to see for spark (yes), compression (60 in one 90 in another-this has me worried), air (good) and gas-noticed here that the plugs stayed dry even though I have gas to the carb and throttle and choke are working-both manual. Tried a few more pulls and nothing, except I am getting gas flowing out of the water intake? Any help here???

Sounds like the fuel pump element is split or torn - You can enter your 217.XXXXXX model number here;

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

and see a 'sploded view - look at the carburetor, and you'll see that in a hole in the face of the mounting flange, there is an orange rubber fuel pump element. it has to be installed with the ends of the slotted hole pointing at 8 and 2 o'clock. DO NOT turn that motor over unless the plug wires are grounded! That can fry the ignition, and you do NOT want any of that. Of course, you may just have a stuck or sinking float or a bad needle. You don't buy parts from Sears, you just get part numbers from them, and then call these guys;

VinParts

You can also get OEM stuff here;

Results for ESKA - Sears / Ted Wms

The cracked plug and reduced compression in one blow hole are worrisome indeed. If the head got hot enough to crack a plug, you may have a warped head, blown gasket, etc. There are a couple of genuine experts on these motors around here, and I expect you'll be seeing something more useful from them before too long - good luck.

What year is the engine?
I have a 1991 Force 9.9 which is identical to a GameFisher and recently came into a similar problem. After bringing the motor out of hibernation and starting it. Mine started surging and died out completely. It only ran with the choke on and the throttle at half and would stall when put into gear.
First, I Checked the the Fuel pump, took it apart and cleaned it with some carb cleaner and put it back together. you have to keep it clean or else it will clog and fail.
Second, I cleaned the carb. Took the whole carb off (pain in the A**). Took the float bowl off and cleaned the that out and cleaned the rest with out taking it apart. all just using carb cleaner.

That worked for me and should work for you. it took me all of 30 minutes.
Hey, these engines are run really strong and like all other motors they require a little maintenance, time, and patience.

Thank you for the response! I haven't done much to it yet, I have been depressed! I believe it is a early to mid 80's model. I like the idea of pulling down the fuel system, but I am still concerned about the 30% difference in the compression. I'm not sure if this condition was present when I bought it (wish I would have checked it out prior to running it) or, if something failed and consequently blew my compression. This motor is water cooled, applying what I know of car engines, I wonder if I lost water flow and I overheated? The fact that I had a broken plug in the bad cylinder (60lbs ) has me thinking I have some major problems.

Same here. Eska went tits up in '86, and Force started making Gamefishers for Sears after that, so a model number would be useful to determine if you have a Tecumseh of force. I got a bad feelin' because it ran great at first, then maybe some aged and fatigued rubber part, like a pump impeller let go and cooked your goose.

Wich cylinder has lower compression? Check crank shaft seals if upper - under fly wheel, if lower - remove power head. Tiny red condom aka fuel pump element is PITA. Fuel with alcohol destroys rubber in weeks. I have modify my Gamefisher to Wallboro fuel pump and over 3 years have no problem. BTW this motor has no cylinders head, it's like lawn mower cylinder, steel bell molded in aluminum. For more accurate diagnosis, after motor died did you tried to start it? Was it turning around freely??

Hey, pellasaws - all your posts seem more like bad ads for eskaman2008's ebay store than attempts to help the OP solve his problem. That wouldn't be because pellasaws IS eskaman2008, now would it? Hmmm..... Classy.

Thanks for the info, yes, it is the upper that has 60 lbs pressure and the lower has 90. After motor died, I did try to start. It does turn freely, and has spark. Haven't dug into the guts yet, wanted to hear what others are saying.
