Hello,

I have an early 50's 7.5 HP Elgin/Sears outboard that has forward and neutral shifting.

I would like to know the path of the water through the motor or maybe you can tell me if I have it figured out.

We first cleaned out the water shroud on the right side. Then I took head off the motor. The back panel was then taken off. It looks like the water comes up from the water pump and into the bottom of the back plate. It circulates through the back plate and grooves and then goes throught the right side and into the side plate, around it, and through a hole in the side which goes out with the exhaust.

While in the back grooves, water will go between the two center grooves. It doesn't look like the water will go through the walls in the top or bottom part. Is that correct?

I was wondering how the water is supposed to go out the group of about 20 holes 1/3 of way down below the head. You can't see a light coming through and they don't seem to be plugged.

I tried to drop this shaft down partway and when I tried to lock the allen bolt the shaft still has 1/4" of gap between it and the lower unit. I don't remember any gap there before.

Do you know what plugs it takes and the gap?

Will the plate holding the points come off without disturbing anything? I might have to take it off to get at a broken bolt.

That's for any information. Bob
