Sears Gamefisher Tell-tale question

I just inherited what I believe to be a 1985 Sears Gamefisher 9.9 (217.586260). I can get the engine to turn over and run but according to the manual it is showing I should see a tell-tale out the right rear underside of the engine. I also see exhaust relief holes and water outlets on the column. Where exactly should I be seeing any water coming out of this. I have ran across some other threads that say some of these are air cooled engines and water cooled for the exhaust leg. I have just received a new impeller and have removed the lower to replace it. The drive shaft and water tube came out easily enough. I tried to follow the water tube up to to see where it winds up but did not remove the powerhead. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Sears Gamefisher Tell-tale question

Welcome to Iboats,

You should feel a mist of water from the relief holes, the mist or spray is not always visible to the eye depending on the leg design...as it has been miss stated many times that these engines have a water cooled leg it is in fact that there a hybrid design that actually cools the bottom of the cylinder and main bearing, any cooling to the leg is only secondary to the removal of heat from the actual engine.
Older AV750 and AV520's model Tecumseh's did not have the water chamber for the cylinder cast into the block and the water only circulated between the cooling plates acting as a heat sink for the exhaust port and main bearing areas.

be careful to install the water tube correctly, they can be tricky

Re: Sears Gamefisher Tell-tale question

Tricky is not the word I would use..Pain in the a-- is more like it. Silly me I thought this would be a quick impeller change. The lower unit came off nicely, the drive shaftr slid out easily enough along with our friend the water tube. Changed out the impeller no problem, slid the pump back on and then came the road block. Since the drive shaft is stationary on the lower unit I have tried both inserting the water tube in the pump housing and sliding the whole assembley up the leg to try and get them both to seat and the opposite of seating the water tube up inside the leg and sliding the lower unit up to try and get them seated that way. No luck. Any tricks you can help with as 2 hours later I am still not having any luck. Do I have to remove the powerhead? Any help is appreciated.

Re: Sears 7.5 HP Crank seal?

is there a secret to getting that thing plugged in? depends on which end your working from and how the water tube connects to the cooling plate, if the tube uses a nut and washer to attach I install the tube down the leg using a small flash light, once in the pump I align with the plate and secure then mount the engine,

Second method w/o nut on cooling plate, I stand the engine on its head shine light down the leg install water tube in cooling plate, then drop the foot w/drive shaft down the leg expecting contact with the crank shaft, once in the crank I lower foot to about a pinky finger from leg to foot and then manipulate the water tube into the pump with the pinky or a stiff wire.

Any body know anything about doodle bug mini bikes?...help mrcrabs needs backup
