Re: sears outboard 3hp air cool

I owned one of these ... as far as I can remember it required lawn mower type oil not outboard. Castrol has one 2 cycle oil that is made for air cooled motors and another for OB's.

Reason mentioned was that air colled OB's run hotter (just like lawn mowers) than water colled OB's.

I beleve the Air Cool lawn mower oil would be closest to 30 w motor oil and if the OB was mine I would use lawn mower type oil.

That being said .... it's your move. lol

The oil for 2 stroke air cooled engines is usually chainsaw or weedwhacker oil.

Don't remember ever seeing lawnmower 2 stroke oil.

Ah...here in the frozen north, there are thousands of 2-stroke Lawnboy mowers in use. Trust me, they sell oil for them. Lawnboys were around long before a weedwhacker ever existed.

Actually, Pennzoil makes a dual-purpose oil for 2-strokes. It's TCW3 rated, but they recommend it for air-cooled applications as well. It's inexpensive, and is found everywhere, including my local supermarkets and convenience stores.

I use it because it can be found where I go. I think it would be fine for that little Sears outboard.
