Hello all, I have read a few post on this site and find it very relevant to my new project.
I recently picked up a Sears 4.5 outboard from a guy at work. model number 217 5946-3. he says it ran good when he stopped using it a few years ago, and likely just needs fresh gas and possible carb clean.

So far I have found there is no spark, i have tried a new plug, still no spark. I then pulled the flywheel, checked the point gap when i noticed that the area is wet with oil!!!! this leads me to believe the crank seal is bad.

Is sears the best place to get get parts for this relic?

What is the procedure to change this without disturbing the ignition timing?

Thanks in advance

NO! not at all......call the fine people at www.certifiedpartscorp.com look under vintage for the phone number and have your model and parts number ready....PS don't expect them to hold your hand and tell you how to fix it,

its not the ignition timing thats to worry with its the sync between the carb and ignition, full timing advance is set by a stop tab on the stator plate and will most likly stay unchanged.

Buy a Service Manuel or find a copy of the Tecumseh 2 cycle engine manual.

I think I'd clean up under the flywheel, and take a looksee if the points are all oiled up, too. Get'em pristine, and gap'em at .020", then see if you got fire. And clean up the magnets in the flywheel, while you're there.

Thanks for the feed back, I have also notice that the coil has been rubbing on the flywheel, and is likely suspect as well. it seem it was not secure.

I will be contacting www.certifiedpartscorp.com at the end of the week.
