I just picked up a Sears Tecumseh (Ted Williams?) 3.5 horse # 217-58560 motor for cheap at a yeard sale and am trying to get it running again. It barely had a spark so I just ordered a kit for the consenser and points.

Any idea what I should set the points gap to? The local lawnmower guy said "set 'em where it works." Great help. No wonder he has eight fingers left.

Also, if that does not work, I am trying to figure out how to test the coil. I saw a guy do it once where he tested the primary coil by running an ohmeter across the two small wires. When I do this I get a "00" reading meaning there is a continuous loop and no resistance in the coil -- good. However I cannot get any readings on the secondary coil loop. I have tried my ohmeter from the spark plug lead to either of the smaller leads and to both combined... (the coil has two small leads and the spark plug lead coming from it). Any help out there in internet land?

I guess I could just replace the coil but I am a cheap bas---d and will do anything to get out of vacuuming the house.
