110 commpression.. carb has been rebuilt twice... starts up.. but then dies out..

if the water pump isnt working right can it over heat and not want to start/stay running?

or can it be sucking air somewhere?

or rebuild the carb AGAIN?

any input would help thanx

Welcome to Iboats,
or rebuild the carb AGAIN?
I wouldn't think so, making sure you have rebuilt it right would be first on my agenda.
any chance you got a instruction sheet with your rebuild kit? or do you have access to the Tecumseh engine manual?
how about a link to marshall public library

i do have the original manual.. couple more questions

the service manual says to run it at 25:1 ratio
but a friend that works at a marina said to run it at 40:1ish
because back when the motor was new it used a different type of oil... true or false?

and the carb bowl does leak a little bit with the screw at the bottom.. i have a different bowl without the screw.. dont know if its necessary to have..

also the fuel line to the carb has a shut off inbetween.. should i try by passing the shut off incase its rusted/clogged/not open completely?

could the carb be sucking air causing it to die that often?

depending on what screw your talking about, some bowls have a drain valve but if its the power jet you will not be able to switch between a emissions jet and a adjustable jet, and yes get rid of all the fuel lines and rusty old crap and buy a briggs type plastic 1/4 in shut off valve and a small inline filter for 2 cycles, I like the yellow clear line.
and clean the filter basket behind the flapper gasket ( you will need to replace that most likly,)

I would need to know the outboard model number before I could say for sure on the oil but if its a AV817 640 series engine then yeah 40ish depending on cowling type ( some have better air flow than others), if the impeller is shot 16:1....lol

if you search this forum you will most likly some up with a sierra part number for the impeller.

its a 1973 24:1 engine but frankly the only difference I kow of between it and a 1977 50:1 engine is OE piston ring depth and lower seal design. I would run it 40ish with good ole J/E XD25
1973 is a engine model design change year for the lower crank bearing on some models, you notice that over the next few years this same design goes from 24:1 to 32:1 then moves right into 50:1 from there on out, same parts same metal athough base cooling plates changed and cowl designs

so like a lawnmower 1/4 inline filter would work? and what does the impeller have to do with the mix ratio?

no actual fuel pump part showing in the parts diagrams

fuel lines go straight from the tank to the shut off to the carb

It would be useful to know HOW LONG your engine runs before it dies.

If it's just a few seconds....

1. It wouldn't have time to overheat.
2. Inhibited fuel delivery.

SOMEtimes.... just shooting carb cleaner into ports & tubes isn't enough. You gotta run fine wires thru to 'break' a blockage loose.

It recently happened to me with a '59 7.5 Scott McCulloch. A wire cleared a blockage up the tube from the float chamber.
Good luck.

it was in an ultrasonic cleaner last summer or atleast i paid for it to be thoroughly cleaned.. the tank had a little bit of rust so maybe some particles at clogging it up.. haven't ripped the carb apart yet.. waiting for a couple parts.. will keep posted

Re: sears ted williams 7.5 HELP PLEASE

yeah, my plan of attack would be repair replace gas tank and soak the carb (after total teardown) in cleaner for 4 hours............ clean every nook and cranny.

that E10 can be a mighty PITA devil...............change all fuel delivery lines to ones that are tolerant of E10 as well..........

no actual fuel pump part showing in the parts diagrams

Davem3 is correct Look again you do have a pump element, PART NUMBER: 630953, and make sure the slot in the pump is turned to the 8 & 2 O'clock position.
splitting is a common problem with these orange pumps elements or as some call them a pump bladder.

also check you float for leaks, a sinking float can cause the engine to only run for short periods.
Hold it up to your ear, you will hear gas sloshing in the float if its a slow leaker.

yea that pump element was replaced recently because it was blown to pieces.. ill double check it again and make sure its still in once piece and in the right position

unless someone wants to come rebuild it for me and or show me a correct way to break it down and clean it :p i tend to jump into things and learn as i go so i remember how for future reference
