Hello, thanks for looking at my post !

I have a 1972 Sears Ted Williams 7.5hp outboard. The model # is 217-58880. Serial # is 220400.

What can I still do to it in a tune up with parts still available ? Is this a solid state system ? Any info will be greatly appreciated. I have reviewed old topics & wanted to see what else might come up.

Welcome to Iboats.

Have you been to Sears Parts Direct? This is the link for your motor;

Unfortunately, this one looks like a solid state job. :(

Thanks RogersJetboat454 !

I have been to sears parts site to get basic info but did not dig down in the parts diagrams.

My father and I were using the engine on a lake 4 years ago and it just stopped. I'm just now digging for answers. I'm going to check compression & spark soon. While repairing or after I'm going to rebuild the carb and anything that might need it. I replaced the impeller a couple months before the engine stoppage so it should be fine. If the solid state is a problem is this link the best info to go by for repair/replacement - http://home.earthlink.net/~edstoller/index.html

Is the chassis & lower unit eska and the engine tecumseh ? sears parts says craftsman outboard motor, but from what I have read on this forum "craftsman" not right.

Andy,
I'm by no means an expert on these motors. Hopefully one of the guru's will be along to assist you better with your questions.
In the mean time, I would check compression and spark so you have some answers.

Good Luck!

BTW, just a thought as to why they now call it a Craftsman outboard VS Ted Williams. This is mere speculation, so take it with a grain of salt, but it could be that Sears may no longer have the right to use the Ted Williams name.

Thanks again ! Does any one have a Mechanic's service manual for eska motors 3.5 - 7.5 ? I got a hold of a owners manual which no doubt helps but a mechanics one would be the bees knees !

Last night I put her in a barrel and tried to get her started. I went and got some fresh gas and mixed it up to 24:1 . I primed the fuel system. Then I check for spark and it sparked great when the throttle was in start position. I cleaned the plug and regapped it to .30 . Then reinstalled the plug and wire boot. I tried pull starting while choked a few times then unchoked 5-7 times and it did not sound like it even wanted to turn over. I primed the fuel alittle more and pulled away. nothing. I primed the fuel again and keep squeezing the bulb about 20 times. I pulled again and it acted like it wanted to turn over and run but that was very short lived. primed the fuel another 10 times and pulled. It started and ran very badly for 10 seconds or so then died. I then primed the fuel another 10 times or so and tried starting it in drive with the throttle all the way open. I pulled and it started and ran but not smoothly. then it quit after around a minute or so. It ran strong while in drive so I'm hoping a carb rebuild & a new plug will do it to get her running smooth. The impeller was working like it should spitting water like crazy.

Well it showed life so im happy !!! I saw a guy on ebay selling a complete carb rebuild kit for $30 or with float $35 ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/261070065510?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 ) . His name was eskaman20008.

Does this seem like all i would need ? along with the plug of course.

Hey Randy, sounds like you got it on the run now. When you go for parts, try to use OEM stuff, because the knock offs can screw you over. The original carb to reed plate gasket is not the same as aftermarket, and that screws with the throttle/stator sync. The two best places to get parts are Certified Parts Corporation, and here;

http://www.boatsportandtackle.com/servlet/the-Eska--dsh--Sears--fdsh--Ted-Wms/Categories

Both OEM suppliers, both reasonable for prices. Do not yank that starter with the plug ungrounded, you can barbeque the stator doing that. The usual protocol is to get part numbers from the sears site, and either call CPC with numbers in hand, or order from boatsportandtackle. When you do the carb, be sure to line up the slot in part# 6, (fuel pump element), at 2:00 and 8:00 positions.
