I have a 14ft starcraft seafarer that I am working on rebuilding. It has 3 bench seats made of the original teak(?) wood boards covering the flotation boxes.

I would like to bolt a base plate for swivel seats thus giving me the option to use an 11inch seat extender when fishing to give me a higher view of the water.
Do you think the teak seats are strong enoughto hold a seated person in the elevated position? I'm thinking about removing the teak and using aluminum for the seats to give me a stronger base.

I'll post pictures later.

I have a similar boat and the seats are mahogany not teak. Also, I do not believe they will be strong enough to support what you are trying to do since the boards are 3/4" thick just edge screwed into a aluminum seat box frame, which itself is not very rigid.

I wonder what type of wood they originally used for these seats?

I THOUGHT teak, but I'm not really sure. These seats are bolted to the box frame and bolted at the sides to a strap support.

Mahogany is the original wood used.

Here is what my seats look like.

Does this mean I should not use a teak cleaner or cetol marine sealer for this type of wood?
What do you guys recommend to clean up a weathered/grayed mahogany and seal it?

Remove, sand, and apply spar varnish.
