Yeah, the trick is the shaping of the foam. You can shape foam and build the covers but once you get out of the "square" design, it starts to get more complicated. I'm doing a similar style of seats right now except the foam is square - no contoured bolsters to keep you from sliding off, etc. I decided to go with a one-color pleated panel in the center of the seat and even that is adding complications to the job.
If you're happy enough with square cushions, have a good sewing machine and know how to use it then check out Ron Magnus' Auto Upholstery book. But remember you'll still have flat-looking cushions on a plywood base that is susceptible to rot, and you probably won't save a lot of cash by the time you're done.
