I have an old merc 50hp with a magneto. I am planning on putting in an electric trolling motor and would install a second battery with it. What is my best set up for this? I have a battery isolater but don't know how you would set it up with a magneto or how well it would handle a heavy charge to the trolling motor battery.

Isolators have to be capable of handeling/excede the maximum output of the charging system.

my isolater is good for 120 amps, so that is not a problem,,, i would just charge up second battery seperatly,,, but when i go to northern saskatchewan fishing i am there for3-5 days with no easy way to charge

Do you know the output of your charging system? Might not be more than 4 or 6 amps. Depending on your useage...wouldn't expect that outboard to charge a trolling battery without a lot of WOT running time. I mean hours. Probably be more fuel-efficient to bring an inverter and AC charger to charge it with your vehicle.

My last campout, 5 days, non-electric campsite, I used 2 parallel-wired trolling batteries, had plenty of power.

I recall an instructional video once where there was a group of people who were apparently island camping. They used on-hand materials to build a stationary bicycle which was rigged via a pully to an electric generator. There was a guy in a red shirt and white hat who pedaled furiously to generate the needed electricity.
