I am not sure if this should go here or under Boats, but here is my question...

I have a 25' pontoon with a 90hp merc 2-stroke. The boat oinly has a 24 gallon fuel tank. I would like to be able to add a second tank. I currently have a racor filter mounted on the boat. The racor, has to inlet fittings. I want to put an adaptor on the racor, so when needed I could just hook up a 6 gallon portable tank that I used for my dingy.

Would this work, and would I have to put a shutoff valve between the racor and the adaptor? I would put a shutoff valve, between the main tank and they racor, so when I hookup the auxilary tank, it does not draw from the main and just disconnect the aux, when I open the main tank.

Also could I use one primer bulb or should I have one for each line?

Jollymon

Re: Second fuel tank

one primer is fine. a fuel shut off to isolate the tanks is mandatory. if one is dry it will suck air from it rather than fuel from the full one. pumps are as lazy as I am. they will pump whatever is easist.

Rodbolt,

Thanks, The lazy, air vs gas makes it real clear.

I guess where I am not clear is, the quick connects for the portable tanks, do they "shut off" when disconnected? I assumed that they do, or when you disconnect gas would leak out.

Also does anyone know of an inexpensive gas shutoff valve, the only ones I can find are $25 or more.

Jollymon
Best and safest would be a two way valve, with a handle that you turn manually to the tank in use. Eliminates nasty surprises, such as fuel leakage out on open water.
Be happy, and safe. Batavier
