I'm dealing with a couple Volvo Penta 41s, & my boatwork guy tells me there is a second set of alternators that are supposed to charge the house batteries, etc. But cannot seem to locate them. I've downloaded a few manuals already, just wondering if anyone knows anything about their location on the engine before I go through all these manuals, just to save some time. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you. #AQAD41A 867977 for both port & stbd eng.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... Most boats use switches, 'n wirin' to charge all the batteries from 1 alternator on each motor,...

I'm doubtin' yer "Boat Guy's" knowledge,...

I have twin 41A's , STB engine charges starting batteries and PORT engine charges House batteries.. Nice simple system .
I'm not saying they do not exist but I have never seen a 4X series Volvo with 2 alternators.

:welcome: to iboats

Agree with others, never heard of a second "set" of alternators, it's probably setup as K-2 mentioned.

I take it your unable to get your house batteries charged, correct?

Dual alternators was an option on the AD41D's. I've never seen them on the AD41A's. And certainly have never seen them on the AQAD41A's

It is not something you would have stock on that engine.

Re: second set of alternators

Well we figured out the inverter needed to be replaced. The mechanic who is no longer being used on this boat had set the negative terminal on the stbd eng from the eng. battery to the alternator, & had the positive running from battery to starter, but on the port engine both neg and pos went from battery to starter, like it is in the engine manual for schematics, electrical diagrams. I changed it so the negative and positive both connect to the starter from the battery on stbd like it has in the manual. When he put the new starter in, he connected a cable to the starter that ran back through the fusebox to the inverter, & we think the backfeed caused a lot of damage. Inverter quit working after he put the starter in, buying a new one. Freedom marine 25. I'm going to go through the entire engine with the manuals and the diagrams to double check every potential fault condition before installing the new inverter. Good times.

FWIW, I have seen a few larger diesel motors with twin alternators. usually the 8.3 cummins in a single application.

Volvo did make an extra alternator kit for the 41s. The extra mounted next to the water pump and was run by an extra pulley added to front.
