I am thinking that my lower unit oil needs changed or added to. How do I check the level on the lower unit oil and if it needs to be filled where do I put the oil in at? It is a 1950 model with forward only gear and a nertral shift.

Re: SEEBEE Needs Lower Unit Oil

There should be two plugs/bolts in your lower unit...one marked Fill and the other marked Drain/Vent. Put a catch pan under the lower unit. Remove the plugs/bolts and check the condition of the lube. You may have to put a matchstick or something similar in the Fill hole to get a sample of the lube. You should use Lubriplate 105 white engine grease in your outboard since it is a non-gear shift model. Get a tube from an auto parts or other store. Insert the tube tip in the Fill hole and squeeze the lube in there until it starts coming out of the top Drain/Vent hole. Remove the tube and install the Fill plug. Wipe off the excess around the Drain/Vent hole and install that plug. Good to go.

Some motors only have a drain screw at the bottom side. In that case, drain it, then lay it on its side and fill with Lower Unit lube.
