I have two champion outboards 1948 9.7 and 1946 4.2 and was wondering if anyone can tell me if they have to be moving in the water for the water pump impeller to push water

Re: seeking knowledge for champion outboards

I don't believe the Champion water pumps relied on suction, or forward movement through the water. Your 46 champion, probably a 1 cyl., has an impeller on a shaft but the impeller is metal instead of rubber. I have run mine in a barrel successfully to check the water circulation and cooling and it spits a fine mist out of the outlet holes on the back of the leg...but not a steady stream of water like other outboards. Don't know about your 9.7 hp but it may be similar to the water pump arrangement on your 46 motor. If neither one puts any water out the ports while running, shut it down and check the pump. The impellers are keyed to the shaft and it may be that the key is missing or has just worked loose. This site has an owners manual on CD for the Champion J&K one cylinder motors:
www.acmeoutboards.com
Champions are under rated compared to other brands. I've run my 46 1 cyl. for several years and it is very reliable and simple to maintain and service. Hope this helps.

Forgot to add...the guys on these boards might have more info on manuals, operation, etc.:
www.aomci.org Ask A Member board
www.pfs-ware.com Ollie's board

They are gurus of the old iron and always seem to answer my questions right on target.
