Serial 6143366. Electric. Is it long or short? It has no lower unit. How can I find model information? Can I choose short or long shaft or will only one fit this motor? Thanks In advance.

Not sure if it is a long of short shaft, but you can choose. You just have to find a lower unit that will fit it, other models will be compatible. You can look up your motor using the serial number on Crowleymarine.com.

I just have to find a lower unit that will fit? That's why I'm looking for model information. As well you are wrong about using both lower unit shafts. No motors do that without conversion. I do know that some boats users have serial number search engines to find the original model/sold date/warrantees and service. Anyone who doesn't know, just don't respond.

Mercury wasn't big on model numbers back then. If you want to know what will fit, measure it. If motor measures approximately 12-14 inches from the clamp bracket's upper mounting face to the bottom of the motor mid, it's probably a short shaft. If it measures about 17-19, it's probably a long shaft...

You don't have to be rude, and that is not entirely incorrect. My dad is running a lower unit off of a 1985 Merc 70 on his 1985 Merc 80, because they fall in the same serial range. I have also read many threads on this forum where that same answer has been given. My apologies for trying to help.

That's not very nice, Everyone is just trying to help you out in different ways with usable information free of charge. only a small group of forum users offer their merc dealer status of information that technically they are not supposed to provide this information according to Merc's rule book.

Your engine is a MERCURY 40 EL (Long shaft) (1982) Serial #06143366 Model #1040522.

Yes. The boat requires a short shaft but has a transom extension.

Thanks to Fun Times and Chinewalker. Very helpful. Also, I didn't intend to be anything but more direct. All helpful, knowledgeable or informative advice is appreciated. I do think all opinions should be written as such. Thanks again.

Yes, he swapped years and hp, not shaft sizes. It is common that motor use the same lower for large year groups ranging several engine hp.

You will quickly come across as arrogant if you ask a question and then tell someone who answers, that they are wrong, and not to reply if they don't know. Seems like you already know all the answers anyway.
