Seeking opinions on the value

Hi folks....been lurking as a guest for a while getting some great insight. Recently registered on the forum, but still a newbie. I'm looking for others opinions / insights on a potential purchase.

I'm considering a 1989 Chaparral Villain. A survey is scheduled (incl. sea trial), and for the purposes of the thread we're going to assume that no major engine or structural issues are identified. Those are walk away items for me. I am NOT looking to learn how to replace a transom or stringers, nor pay someone else to. I'm also going to assume there will be maintenance issues that will need to be tended to....fluid changes, bellows replacement, trailer tires / bearings, etc. Let's figure $1000-1500 for starters (although opinions on that figure are welcome as well).

22 Year old Villain III (24') with some cosmetic issues (see the photobucket pics)
7.4L 330HP Mercruiser / Bravo One - 600hrs on the clock
Mostly fresh water use, but some brackish (upper Chesapeake) and a few trips to the shore
New gimble bearing / U-Joint bellow within last year per the owner
Bennett tabs
Tandem trailer with working surge brakes
Asking price of $7500

What would you offer???

All thoughts / opinions are welcomed and appreciated.

If it was in better condition the $7500 might be a fair price. However, it's a little rough. I'm thinking more like $4-5k especially at this time of year in our area.

Thanks ezmobee.

I had followed your thread on the restoration of the SuperSport. You did a great job. We had a '76 SuperSport when I was a kid and seeing yours really took me back. We had a ton of fun on Raystown with it.

Thanks! I'm planning on heading to Raystown on the 7th for the weekend. Can't wait! Just "discovered" it this year and this will be my third trip out.

I would want to pay less than 5, so I'd offer 4 g's. I look at that boat like I would a typical car that has reached 10 years of age and 100k in miles: It's something that can be had for 5 grand... so 7500 just seems outta touch.

Raystown should be a blast, and not too crowded this time of year. If the Villain deal goes through, it'll be a regular destination for us. (And I am JONESING to open up that 7.4L and make a run from one end to the other!) It's a 2-2.5 hour haul from Carlisle, but we have family in Bedford so it makes a nice dual purpose trip. The weekend of the 7th should be about perfect to catch the fall foliage. I hope you have a great time.

Maybe a more interesting way of asking my question is this....when a guy advertises a boat at $7500, what do you think he's really hoping to get out of it?

Well, the way bargaining is supposed to work, if you ask 7500, you should expect 6900-7000 as the rock bottom, and hopefully 7200. That is if people did it right.

Negotiating is a lost art form. If the bidder feels 7500 is sky high, don't make an offer.
