I found on the internet info@sterndrive.cc and they claim to have a replacement for the alpha 1, they are out of Clearwater Fla. I was looking at the se106 that can take up to 300 HP. like the Alpha. Does anybody have any experience with these units? They want around 1300$ for a new complete unit. If this is a bad idea, how about somewhere I can get a Merc alpha cheap?

I got a lower unit unit from them this summer (late), very easy to deal with. I didn't get it to the lake but have probably an hour on the muffs, everything seems to be fine. From what I saw on-line, they are by far the cheapest.

Re: SEI outdrives

I replaced my Alpha 1, gen 1 with one of their units and have had no problems so far. VERY reasonably priced.

By the way, if you do a search on ebay - most of the vendors that sell outdrives sell the SEI units. You can sometimes get a better deal through a dealer than buying direct from SEI. I was going to buy direct and pick it up, since Clearwater is not too far up the road, to save shipping costs, but it turned out to be cheaper for me to buy it off the internet.

Great, I appreciate the feedback and anymore about the units. I am going to replace an 888, the SEI site said something about replacing a shaft. What does it come with a short shaft? I think mine is a 12 inch.

Well,..... There's a 8+" shaft length,........ I know it was used on the Chevy In-line motors,......
And a 9+" shaft length,........This 1 is used for the Chevy V-motors,.... I Don't Know about the Ford/888..............

Seems I remember something about the 888 is a Different Width than the rest of the Old Pre-Alphas,..........

Re: SEI outdrives

We have sold two of these outdrives.

first one is fine.

Second one lost a clip on the outer u-joint.SEI fixed the drive damage,we and the customer were left with $1941 parts damage plus labor.

To be fair,I don't know what Mercruiser would have done, but I am not comfortable with SEI.And don't think I'll order more at this point.

DHP

Would you happen to know what outdrive, how much HP and how many hours is on the first on that is OK?

Don't recall the HP,but unless you are replacing an Alpha One drive (1983 and up,you should talk to SEI.Also Alpha Ones from Mercruiser were the same, except for some 1:32 ratio units that had heavier bearings in the upper drive.I do not know how SEI deals with this.

DHP
