My 1969 85 Hydro Electric Motor seized on a test run after changing the oil because I had no reverse or neutral. I now have a one inch hole in the lower unit. What happened? And is it worth fixing?

Don't really know enough about the situation mm. Running without neutral is not good to begin with. Means you start in gear and keep moving. Dangerous thing to do. Possible that a short was causing the problem to begin with. Maybe also possible the thing went into reverse at high rpm. Worth saving?? Depends on the damage done to the internals. May find a used lower unit on ebay.

mmcguffee,One inch hole in the lower unit sounds severe.Maybe it was about to go,but my guess it tried to shift into reverse, while going in forward....this suggests that after you fix the problem with the gearcase you have to find an electrical problem,in the control box or wiring harness.

You have to decide how much $$$ to put into a 35 year old motor.

And yes I know what newer motors cost.Maybe we can't do the new mellenium, but get closer to the mid 80's,at least.???
DHP

The flywheel won't turn. I'm guessing the LU is destroyed and I might now have problems with the powerhead. Right?

When you replaced the gear oil, did you use the "Type C" lube?

c/6
Hooty

Re: seized engine

Yep. I drained it and saw a little water, so I put the c lube in and replaced the vent and drain washers.

That's when i took it out again, cause I thought I might have fixed the neutral problem.
I was going full speed when it seized. BIG clunk. Couldn't even pull-start it afterward.

I'm also wondering if I had a water pump failure. I've read a lot of threads on this site and I know the water pump hasn't been replaced in more than 5 years.

So I now have a 1975 14 foot tri-hull with a new interior and a spongy transom that I just fiberglassed and a motor that I'm guessing is junk.

Any ideas from the pros?

Do you like golf? or the movies? or a quiet bar on a Saturday?

You got a 35 year old frozen motor on a 29 year old boat with a rotten transom. You could stick it in the front yard and make a planter out of it.

Sorry!
