had my johnson serviced today and asked the mechanic to remove the prop for me. i figured it had been years since it was removed. he could not get it off. he tried a puller, etc. he was afraid of breaking something. anyone have any ideas to get this loosened up besides to cut off the prop. it's a stainless steel prop too. this is the third year that i've had this outboard. it's a 1985 johnson 45hp commercial model.

Can't understand why it won't come off. Try nailing it with some penetrating oil, spray let sit , spray let sit. Then apply heat to the prop only, not the shaft.

Lols, glad to help.

That said, you can try soaking the prop (and lower unit) in a bucket of mineral spirits and oil mixed together. We do this with metals that corrode together, which is possibly what happened. Usually a good overnight soak will do the trick. The downfall being that it may dry out any rubber seals, but if you're servicing the lower unit anyhow, perhaps this was the goal? Also test a bit on the painted surface, as it may require a new coat afterwards. The stuff we work with is unfinished cast aluminum...so doesn't hurt us.

Loosen the prop nut and run the motor at the dock shifting between forward and reverse frequently. That may break it loose.

Re: seized prop on my johnny

thanks to all for the tips. i'll try one at a time and see what happens. i wanted to take the prop off originally because it has some nics and rough edges. i wanted to smooth then out. i also wanted to re-paint it because it's looking a bit weathered.

glad to see your still floatin' there mars bar. good to hear from ya. hope things are well with you.
